A Brief History of the Wall Socket

From Edison's 1882 screw lampholder to Hubbell's 1904 separable plug to the 1963 Europlug — a hundred-and-twenty-two-year argument about how to deliver electricity through a wall, conducted simultaneously in Connecticut, Berlin, London, and Geneva, and never quite resolved.

    What to Pack

Two pieces of kit cover nearly every situation in this atlas. The first is enough for modern dual-voltage devices; the second is for anything with a heating element or motor crossing the 120/230 V line.

    1. № 01For Modern Devices

      MOMAX Universal Travel Adapter, 6-in-1

A single cube that fits Type A, C, G, and I sockets — the four most-used in this atlas. Pairs with any dual-voltage charger (look for "100–240 V" on the brick): laptops, phones, cameras.

Typically $33.99 View on Amazon →
    2. № 02For Heating Elements

Ceptics Travel Adapter with Voltage Converter

Steps 230 V down to 120 V (or up) for single-voltage appliances — hair dryers, kettles, curling irons, CPAP machines. Includes plug adapters for the major regions.

Typically $54.99 View on Amazon →
